Extreme Makeover – Turning Desktop Computers into Managed Thin Clients
The benefits of virtualizing the desktop are well documented, but projects stall unless there is a valid business case, which in every case involves financial justification.  IGEL Technology makes virtualization projects viable by providing the means to manage existing assets as thin clients using IGEL’s industry-leading and extremely cost effective workstation management tools. In this session, you will learn that being thin is not about hardware.  We will discuss leading options for turning existing personal computers, laptops, etc. into managed thin client workstations.  You will also see how easily a desktop or laptop computer can be turned into a workspace managed thin client using the IGEL Universal Desktop Converter and Universal Management Suite. Each attendee will walk away with a certificate for three IGEL Technology UDC2 Thin Clients, complete with IGEL’s workspace management system.

"The HOWs and WHYs of deploying bare metal XenApp onto HP Moonshot". When one of the worlds largest finanacial instituations wanted to reduce the cost of their 100k seat VDI deployment, they of course turned to the best guy XenApp guy in the industry. Unfortunately he wasn't available, so they got me. Over the past year, I've designed and built a new XenApp 7.6-based XenApp hosting environment based on HP Moonshot that meets all their high level objectives:

Improve server density in the data centre
Reduce the "watts per user" power consumption
Remove the cost and complexity of the hypervisor
Move away from VDI desktop delivery to XenApp application delivery
Provide shared GPU access to all users and applications (future-proofing)
Remove central single points of failure where possible (cloud-like approach, no PVS!)
In my session I'll cover some of the HOWs and WHYs of what we built

Azure RemoteApp past, present & future. With the initial release, Azure RemoteApp had very limited functionality as many common features were not fully implemented at this stage. But immediately after the initial release it became clear that Azure RemoteApp takes part in Microsoft’s continuous development strategy which is applicable for every Azure component. Many iterations later, Azure RemoteApp has grown into a much more mature solution to publish legacy applications from the cloud, as a full-blown service. In this technical deep dive session, we will take a closer look at where Azure RemoteApp came from, but more importantly where it stands today and what Microsoft’s future plans are. Even though Benny and Freek are both Microsoft MVPs on Remote Desktop Services, they are both independent consultants and will tell you the whole unbiased truth about Azure RemoteApp, including limitations and pitfalls you need to be aware of. They will cover the good, the bad and the ugly. Join their session to get fully up to speed with Azure RemoteApp including the latest features like HTML5, user based assignment, the (new) Azure Portal and Azure Resource Manager integration options.

How Happy is a Happy User: Practical Tips On Quantifying User Experience. Happy, satisfied users are the key to any application or desktop delivery project. Yet, often "health" of a service is measured in abstract performance metrics - network throughput, CPU usage, Memory Usage, Disk performance. This doesn't necessarily translate to a great user experience.New to our industry is a growing trend to add in additional metrics and services that can give a "user experience" value. Is this any use to you, and how are people calculating it? In this session, we will consider user experience metrics from a host of different vendors who are innovating in this space such as Layer8, PairWise, egInnovations, ControlUp, UberAgent, Login VSI, Appensure and Liquidware Labs to understand how they are approaching measuring user experience. What’s new in Windows Server 2016 Failover Clustering (with a focus on Hyper-V naturally). Come and take a look at the enhanced and new features in Windows Server 2016 Failover Clustering. Continuing on the great foundation that Windows Server 2012 R2 provides we'll see how our favorite platform for high availability gets honed to be richer, better, easier to support and more resilient in many more situations or new deployment scenarios. SMB3, stretched clusters, hybrid deployments, new storage options all make for more capabilities but also introduce new needs and permutations to cater for. Come see and join our learning journey on the road to RTM to find out what's available to achieve all this when it's finished."

Automating MCS with PowerShell & Automation Manager. Zero-Touch from VMTemplate to Production. Based on a real-world use case where Nico was the lead architect for building a brand new experience center, in this session he’ll go through all the steps  and challenges involved in creating a fully automated deployment for XenApp/XenDesktop VDA Machines, by automating the installation of all the software components in a modular layered fashion (using RES ONE Automation properly) and then automating the Machine Creation Services bits (using PowerShell) effectively creating a zero-touch solution (not using MDT or SCCM) from a vanilla VMTemplate (on VMware) to a fully working published desktop that is registered and ready to accept user logons without ever needing to go into Citrix Studio. This session will contain some valuable tips for creating your own automated solution.

Optimize user experience with detailed application UI performance data provided by uberAgent. Application performance is key to a great user experience. However, end users do not care about IOPS and MB, the judge an application by the speed of its user interface. Up until now it was very hard for administrators to measure real-world UI performance objectively. This changed with uberAgent 3.5.

Helge Klein Helge Klein, Helge (another one of 7 in the world - CTP, MVP and vExpert, Splunk Revolution Award 2014) worked as an independent consultant and developer before founding vast limits - the uberAgent company - in 2011.
